Biebrza National Park

A day in the Park

If you only have one day available we recommend an educational trail in the Local Education Centre (some 3 hrs) and a visit to the Osowiec Fortress (Twierdza) Museum (at least 2 hrs). The trails start at the headquarters of the Park and follow the "Forest" educational trail to an observation tower. On spring flooded areas, many species of wetland birds can be spotted. Then you cross the bridge over the Biebrza river and walk along the ruins of a 19th century fort. At the Osowiec-Twierdza, you reach another observation tower and wooden foot-bridges over marshland. The trail ends on yet another tower overlooking the Rudzki canal. From there, we turn back to the BNP to meet a guide (pre-booked) for the Osowiec Fortress Museum .

DAY THREE: hiking trip on the „Barwik-Gugny” trail (4 - 5 hrs) – the trail begins at the Barwik forester's lodge (parking lot, campsite and place for bonfire) through the open landscapes of the southern basin of the Biebrza river valley. You can encounter elks, and many bird species including double snipes and cranes. In Gugny village there are some agro-tourist farms.

DAY FOUR: hiking on the „Czerwone Bagno” – round-trip (18 km) and several linking trails. The trip starts from the „Grzędy” forester's lodge in Kopytkowo village. The destination is the observation tower on the Wilcza Góra hill with a broad vista of the central basin of Biebrza. It is easy to spot elks from there. There are broad views of both extended mires, and beautiful forests, as well as patches of sandy bars. The ground under your feet is also worthy of attention: quite often there are tracks of wolves.

DAY FIVE: A kayak trip along the Biebrza river. For beginners – a short trip along the Goniądz - Osowiec stage (some 3 hrs). For the more experienced: The Osowiec – Biały Grąd stage (again some 3 hrs plus return on a truck transporting the kayaks), includes also the stage of Biebrza, most attractive to bird-watchers.

DAY SIX: around the southern basin, by car or by bike (some 100 km). You leave the Osowiec-Twierdza towards the south, taking the rarely frequented "Tsar route" or follow the blue-marked tourist path through dry pine forests. Attractions include a visit to the Budy village at "Biebrza's King", then there are several more places to visit: observation tower on the Ławki bog, an observation point on the Góra Strękowa hill being also the site commemorating 1939 battles of World War II, site of an ancient stronghold at Sambory, viewing a panorama of the marshes from Burzyny observation platform, the place where cattle cross the Biebrza river to reach natural pastures in Brzostowo and walking from the Mścichy village to another observation tower at "Biały Grąd".

DAY SEVEN: Trip to the northern basin of Biebrza. In Lipsk walking the "Folk handicraft" trail or taking a raft trip downstream from Lipsk to Jałowo. Near Nowy Lipsk – hiking on nature trails across fens and mires.
